HISTORY OF THE SMITHY

The original cottage was built C1760 for the curate of the parish. It was later to become the village school with the schoolroom on the upper floor and the teacher’s living accommodation below. The wide arched window on the ground floor indicates its use as a stable entrance.

The Smithy, the building was built the same time and was used to continually as a working smithy until 1953.

Between 1974 and 1976 the Cottage and Smithy was renovated and the smithy building was opened as a museum and craft-shop, and displayed some of the original Smithy equipment.

The Smithy closed in 2018 as a craft-shop and has now newly reopened as a museum and gallery.
